Description:
LSP’s CARMEL-based DSP development boards is the world’s first low-cost
CARMEL-based hardware development tool to become available. The boards come in two configurations: a low-cost EVB board and a PCI card, which is the same board assembled with optional components to extend the application usage. The EVB provides developers with a cost-effective method for initial evaluation of the CARMEL DSP core integrated as a CARMEL CDEV device. Provided as a desktop evaluation board featuring a CARMEL processor, users can easily program and debug DSP applications by using the board in conjunction with TASKING’s CARMEL DSP
tools. TASKING tools allow JTAG-based code development using either parallel or USB port (or PCI for the PCI version).
Therefore, LSP’s CARMEL-based EVB provides users with an easy way to investigate the potential of the CARMEL DSP core and to begin developing applications based on this high performance, yet low power DSP.

Part of an extensive range of LSP development resources, the CARMEL-based EVB provides users with state-of-the-art
hardware that gives designers the tool they need to build their next advanced DSP applications. Designers around the world are turning to the CARMEL DSP code to radically redefine the performance and integration of
communications systems as it delivers high performance and efficient DSP
MIPS without sacrificing power dissipation and code compactness requirements.
LSP’s EVB accelerates this task by allowing them to immediately run
CARMEL application code to determine if it meets their design needs. The EVB’s hardware design information also provides a reference design that sim-plifies CARMEL-based hardware (and software) development.

KEY APPLICATIONS AND FEATURES
The CARMEL DSP core is Infineon Technologies’ latest development in the
area of Digital Signal Processing technology. Aimed at high performance and low power consumption DSP applications, the CARMEL architecture incorporates both a predefined VLIW standard instruction set and a flexible
user-definable instruction set which are based on Configurable Long
Instruction Word technology (CLIW TM).
This makes the CARMEL DSP core ideal for multichannel, advanced applications such as :
• Next Generation Wireless
• Wireless handsets and base stations
• Wireless LAN and WAN modems
• Telecom and Datacom
• Voice Over IP (VoIP)
• Broadband communications
• Multimedia and consumer
• Set-top boxes
• Internet appliances
The EVB is designed to be used as stand-alone or in a PCI expansion slot.
It can be used on the tabletop with an external power supply and TASKING
emulator.
The board features an optional PCI interface, 256K ( 16-bit SRAM, a 16-bit audio codec, a USB controller, a DAA analog phone line interface, an optional FPGA for co-processing, embedded JTAG emulation support (PC parallel and USB ports), and FLASH memory. The fully populated board becomes a regular PCI development board.
